Weekend in Vienna

Im März kamen Freundinnen in Wien vorbei und ich möchte euch heute zeigen, welche Highlights wir von unserem intensiven Wochenende hier in Wien empfehlen können. Und es ist mittlerweile der Sommer angekommen, die Fotos zeigen jedoch den kalten März, bitte nicht wundern. Auf die Tipps hat das aber keine Auswirkung! Lesezeit: 2 Minuten

Today I’d like to show you what to do and see in Vienna if you are just here for a couple of days. The pictures I took are made in March, the tipps are still useful even though it is summer here already!  2 minute read 

Das hier ist ein ganz persönlicher Guide. Wien ist ziemlich groß und jede kleinste Ecke kann sehenswert sein. Alles zu sehen ist an einem kurzen Wochenende jedoch nicht möglich. Daher könnt ihr das als einen Anhaltspunkt sehen, was potentiell schön ist. Petra hat ihre Highlights bereits im März auf ihrem Blog geteilt, schaut mal vorbei.

This is only my personal suggestions what to see. Since Vienna is big and around beautiful you have to choose. To have an other perspective check out Petra’s blog where she wrote about our weekend as well. 

1. Bezirk

Wer in das klassische Wien eintauchen möchte, wird nicht um das Zentrum Wiens, den so genannten Ersten Bezirk oder “Innere Stadt”, kommen. Hier befindet sich die Hofburg, der Graben, der Stephansdom, die Wiener Staatsoper, das Burgtheater, das Rathaus, die Peterskirche und noch so viel mehr. Das ganze Wiener Flair ist hier wirklich auf einem Fleck versammelt.

Well, if you want to see the whole famous Vienna with its opera house, St. Stephans’s Cathedral, Hofburg Palace and all of that you should definitely visit the first district in Vienna. It is the most central part of the city and gives a nice overview over it. Consider that cafes and restaurants are rather expensive. But in case you want to buy at Prada or Louis Vuitton this is the place to be.

2. Neubaugasse

Die Neubaugasse ist gar kein Gässchen, sondern eine ewig lange und womöglich die coolste Straße Wiens. Hier gibt es zum Beispiel solche zuckersüßen Bonbon-Geschäfte, viele Cafés in den Seitengassen und einige Lokale zum Essen. Die Preise sind dabei ganz moderat. Bekannt als die “Straße der Spezialisten” ist die Neubaugasse eine etwas andere Seite von Wien. Die Nähe zur Mariahilferstraße, der größten Einkaufsstraße Wiens, und dem Museumsquartier mit allen wichtigen Museen, macht es quasi unmöglich an der Neubaugasse vorbeizukommen.

One of the most special streets in Vienna is definitely Neubaugasse. You will find unique shops, delicious places to eat, some alternative corners and twice a year there is a flea market (october & may). With its location between Westbahnhof, Mariahilferstraße which is the long shopping street and the MQ the museum district it so located so well you will not miss it while being in Vienna. 

3. Naschmarkt

Richtig sehenswert ist definitiv der Naschmarkt mit seinen Gemüse- und Spezialitätenständen. Am Samstag gibt es hier zusätzlich einen Flohmarkt, ein Besuch lohnt sich also auf jeden Fall. Natürlich ist der Markt am Samstag voller, aber wir haben uns gut durchgeschlagen. Es gibt unglaublich leckere Sachen zu Essen und man darf sogar vom Trockenfrüchte-Sortiment probieren. Tipp: Nicht die Früchte vom erstbesten Stand kaufen. Ein Preisvergleich lohnt sich! Außerhalb der Marktöffnungszeiten kann man hier essen gehen und aus gefühlt Tausend Lokalen auswählen.

The most famous street market here is called Naschmarkt. Every saturday there is also a flea market. Apart from taking amazing pictures and buying vegetables you can try out different sorts of international food in the cafes and restaurants behind the market stalls. Tipp: Don’t buy the dried fruit at the first market stall and compare the prizes. 

Wir haben leider gar nicht eingeplant, am Naschmarkt selbst zu essen. Denn vorher haben wir bei Zweitbester gebruncht (empfehlenswert, aber mit 14€+Getränke extra eher teuer). Aber der Naschmarkt ist der Wahnsinn, es gibt so vieles zu sehen und zu probieren! Wiener Schnitzel, Falafel, Antipasti, Türkisch, Russisch, Asiatisch.

Before coming to Naschmarkt we had a brunch at Zweitbester which was nice but quite expensive with 14€+. So we didn’t try any food at Naschmarkt ourselves, but would definitely do it next time. 

4. Cafés

Wien ist ja bekanntlich die Stadt der Kaffeehäuser. Ich bevorzuge jedoch lieber alternative Orte mit Charme und gutem Kaffee. Geh unbedingt ins Café Phil in der Gumpendorferstraße 10-12. Hier kannst du neben leckeren Getränken auch Bücher, Möbel, Musik und Lampen kaufen. Es ist grundsätzlich voll und die Möbel sind mega gemütlich. Aus meiner Sicht ist die Bücherauswahl besser als in manch einem Buchgeschäft. Weitere empfehlenswerte Cafés sind Jonas Reindl und Balthasar, die ich euch aber gesondert mal vorstellen möchte.

Vienna is quite famous for it’s coffee culture and the coffee shops (“Kaffeehäuser” in German). But I must admit I mostly prefer hipster locations that are not existing for so long simply because the coffee there is much better. My most favorite cafe is Jonas Reindl, but I will tell you more in a separate post some day. Also Balthasar or  Café Phil which you can see underneath are quite nice places to be. Phil is also offering the best book collection ever as well as chairs and lamps and music that is played there. So it is not only a coffee shop, it is a shop for everything nice you can buy. My friends loved it, seriously. 

5. Prater

Kennt man irgendwie auch. Das Riesenrad wollten wir uns wirklich nicht entgehen lassen und es war phänomenal. Aber nächstes Mal fahre ich doch lieber tagsüber. Das Licht in dem Wagen ging nämlich nicht aus und jedes Foto ist daher von einer Spiegelung des Inneren begleitet. Nun ja. Es gibt Schlimmeres. Mehr kann ich zum Prater noch nicht erzählen, schaut einfach mal vorbei.

Prater is a park with an amusement area and the famous Wiener Riesenrad (the giant wheel). I actually just went there once with my friends to take a ride on the wheel. It was amazing to see Vienna at night from above! But I will highly recommend to go during day light because the reflections from inside the wagons make photos quite difficult. It was a nice experience though and since Vienna is very famous for this wheel: Go for it! 

6. Schönbrunn

Das bekannte Schloss Schönbrunn stand ebenfalls auf unserem Touristenprogramm. Lustigerweise war ich dort zum ersten Mal mit meinen Freundinnen nachdem ich bereits seit fünf Monaten in Wien verbrachte. Muss man erst mal schaffen, oder?

Have you heard of the Schönbrunn Palace? It used to be the imperial summer residence not far from Vienna back then and completely inside the city nowadays. When my friends came over it was my first (and last) time there although I live in Vienna for over six months already. How did I manage, seriously? 

Die Anlage bei Schönbrunn ist im Sommer ungefähr eine Milliarde mal schöner als im Winter. Aber ich muss sagen, wir hatten Spaß mit Bänken und Löwen und den Statuen und haben zig Bilder voneinander geschossen. Der Wahnsinn war natürlich das Innere vom Schloss: Wir nahmen die günstigste kleinste Imperial Tour. Diese war kurz und knackig, Fotos übrigens nicht erlaubt. Oops.

We did the smallest inside tour called Imperial Tour and had lots of fun in the huge gardens outside. Since it was still winter back then it was not as beautiful as it must be now. But anyways it was an amazing experience and I really loved the rooms in the palace a lot. Pictures inside are actually not allowed but how can I not take one? No way. We also had fun with all the statues and gardens and took millions of photos of each other there. 

Und das war es auch schon an Tipps für ein kurzes Wochenende in Wien! Ich hoffe, ich konnte euch hiermit ein bisschen Wien schmackhaft machen. Im Sommer kommen zu den sechs Punkten noch alle Stadtparks und Straßencafés sowie Donauinsel und Donaukanal dazu. Und noch eine Milliarde Kleinigkeiten, die diese wunderbare Stadt ausmachen.
